Palazzo Manfredi

Rome, Italy

An elegant hideaway in the heart of what was once Imperial Rome.

Property Overview

Palazzo Manfredi is an elegant hideaway in the center of what was once Imperial Rome, occupying a charming seventeenth-century palace with spectacular views of the Colosseum, the Forum, and the Domus Aurea. Built over the ruins of the Ludus Magnus, the training ground where gladiators prepared for the arena, it is tastefully adorned today with art ranging from sixteenth-century antique paintings to contemporary pieces. The crown jewel is Aroma, the Michelin-starred rooftop restaurant, where the cooking matches the drama of the setting.

History and contemporary design, side by side.

Each room and suite at Palazzo Manfredi pairs the textures and atmosphere of Imperial Rome with clean contemporary design, mixing Cassina Utrecht chairs, Baxter sofas, and Glamora wallpaper alongside fine travertine and warm wood finishes. Views of the Colosseum and the ancient monuments beyond are a constant presence, whether you're in a standard room or one of the suites.
Gym

Training with a view of the Colosseum.

The boutique gym is equipped for a solid workout and may have the most dramatic backdrop of any fitness room in Rome, with direct views over the Colosseum.
Restaurant + Bar

Michelin star dining paired with rooftop views of ancient Rome.

Aroma sits on the top floor of Palazzo Manfredi, its open-air terrace positioned directly above the Colosseum. Executive Chef Giuseppe Di Iorio's menu draws on the flavors and traditions of classic Italian and Mediterranean cooking, with fresh seafood, handmade pasta, and six varieties of bread baked daily, while sommelier Alessandro Crognale oversees a cellar of over 600 labels with a particular focus on Champagne. The restaurant is also available for exclusive hire for private events and wedding ceremonies; proposals can be arranged with roses, Champagne, and a ring delivered under a silver cloche, all with the Colosseum as a backdrop.

The Court is a rooftop cocktail bar tucked between the main palazzo and the adjacent Grand View Suites residence, with a panoramic terrace overlooking the Colosseum and the monuments of Imperial Rome. Bar manager Matteo Zed, whose career has taken him from Japan to New York, brings an international sensibility to the program, with signature cocktails including the Formidable, the Greener, a Cappuccino Negroni, and a Cacio e Pepe Vesper.

  • Location
Palazzo Manfredi sits in the very heart of Imperial Rome, just steps from the Colosseum and directly above the ruins of the Ludus Magnus. The original seventeenth-century building was designed for the Evangelisti family by architect Giovanni Battista Mola, later passing to the Guidi family, who used it as a hunting lodge. In 2002 it was purchased by Count Goffredo Manfredi, a prominent figure in twentieth-century Roman life with a passion for art and entertaining, who transformed it into the hotel it is today. A small loggia on the façade bears the Cicero motto Virtute duce, comite fortuna—"Virtue thy leader, fortune thy comrade"—in tribute to the Manfredi family heritage.
