I fill half of the itinerary with must-see, must-do activities, and I leave the other half open to happenstance. I want to know what it feels like to have an unplanned day wherever I go—to truly soak in the local experience. I also obsessively check the weather so I can pack accordingly, and I always make sure I’m staying at the perfectly positioned hotel to maximize my time.
Also: manicure, pedicure, and spray tan.
My family’s trip to Japan was, hands down, the most memorable travel experience we’ve ever had. I’ve never felt—or been!—so far from home, nor more inspired by a culture. The food, the people, the energy, the traditions, the wabi-sabi, the art—all of it. It was mind-blowing.
We spent six nights in Tokyo, splitting our stay between the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi and the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi, before taking the Shinkansen to Kyoto for four nights at the Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto. One of my core memories from the trip was realizing that all the bicycles I saw sprinkled throughout the cities weren’t locked up. Can you imagine? A stark contrast to life back home in NYC.
Keep up with the places that deserve more than a bookmark, but a check-in.
