Choosing just one memorable travel experience feels impossible. My years living in Kenya brought countless safaris, from the open savannah of the Masai Mara to the stark beauty of Namibia’s desert landscapes. In Rwanda, I hiked into the jungle and encountered a family of thirteen gorillas within arm’s reach. Exploring the Galápagos Islands with my teenage daughters was extraordinary, from swimming alongside thousands of dolphins and playing in the water with curious sea lions to watching the courtship dance of blue-footed boobies. In Svalbard, I watched an extraordinary confrontation between walruses and a polar bear.
More recently, hiking in Torres del Paine during Patagonia’s fall, traversing remote landscapes in Greenland that felt as though no one had ever set foot there, and walking across Bolivia’s flooded salt flats have joined those memories. The salt flats reflected the sky so perfectly that the horizon seemed to disappear, creating the most memorable sunset of my life.
Antarctica is at the top of my list, both for its extraordinary landscapes and because it will be my seventh and final continent. I would love to include the Falkland Islands and South Georgia in that journey for the incredible wildlife encounters, especially the vast penguin colonies. After exploring the Arctic, I’m excited to experience the other end of the world.
I’m also looking forward to visiting Australia, where my daughter will be spending a semester abroad. I loved New Zealand so much that I’m eager to explore Australia’s diverse landscapes, wildlife, and coastlines, with the added joy of sharing part of that experience with her. There is so much I want to see, and perhaps I’ll combine the trip with Fiji for some time exploring its islands and marine life.
