Set on a garden estate with a serene swimming pool at its heart, Amantaka is housed in graceful French colonial buildings in Laos’ UNESCO-protected town of Luang Prabang. Airy and elegant throughout, the décor and furnishings reflect the town’s French colonial history. Situated just south of sacred Mount Phousi, the 24-suite property lies within strolling distance of the Mekong River and the former Royal Palace, as well as the temples, bakeries and boutiques lining the town’s main street.
White-walled and green-shuttered, the period building retains all the tranquillity of its past. You would never know you’re nestled in the midst of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO protected old town. A former French colonial outpost transformed into a lush garden retreat, each room has its own vibe of calm and comfort with a zen pool anchoring the estate.
Drawing on the town’s Buddhist heritage, Amantaka’s suites are peaceful sanctuaries that feel close to nature. Accessible via a courtyard through louvered doors, suites have high wooden ceilings, large windows, freestanding bathtubs, kingsize four-posters and private outdoor areas. Arguably the best part of all the rooms is the myriad of bathing options; guests can shower inside where there’s a huge soaking tub, or listen to nature while standing under a rain shower in their outdoor private terrace.
The property has a 26-metre main pool lined with beautiful dark green tiles for ultimate relaxation. Or, if guests want to be more active, there’s a fully equipped gym and yoga studio which overlook the central pool. Private yoga lessons are available on request and hitting partners can be arranged at the resort’s nearby tennis court.
Guests can arrange massage and beauty treatments drawing on Lao traditions. There are four treatment rooms, each with a dressing area, a Jacuzzi and relaxation room. There’s also steam and sauna facilities with hot and cold plunge pools.
Amantaka serves authentic Lao and French-influenced cuisine in a number of dining venues. The Dining Room provides an airy colonial ambience, while the Lounge Bar is the ideal spot for relaxing over an evening drink. The breezy Pool Terrace is a casual dining venue for lunch and dinner. Private dining can be arranged in a choice of secluded locations around the property.
Amantaka has a beautiful bar with Hemingway-esque drinks.
The vibe is on the calmer, quieter side and is recommended for adults.
Amantaka lies in the center of picturesque Luang Prabang and is walking distance from boutiques, bakeries and restaurants, as well as the Mekong River and the town’s night market.
