COMO Maalifushi in the Maldives is the only resort in unspoilt Thaa Atoll, surrounded by Indian Ocean vistas. The resort provides numerous opportunities to explore the region and luxurious accommodation designed with relaxation in mind. COMO Maalifushi is also home to three restaurants and the award-winning COMO Shambhala Retreat.
Authentic, understated, remote, modern, private
This design woven through the accommodation here references indigenous architecture while remaining elegantly pared back to reflect the island’s calming setting. In line with the classic look of overwater bungalows, the suites and villas here are built off wooden walkways that stand above the shallow lagoon. Each has its own private terrace for slipping into the sea, while their garden rooms benefit from being set in the island’s tropical heart.
The views at COMO Maalifushi are consistently spectacular: either lush gardens, where children can play, or directly out to the watery expanse. Each room’s décor is designed to bring the colors of sea, sand and sky into the heart of the residence, be it an overwater villa or a beach house set among garden palms.
The property has a main infinity pool located nearby the restaurant and bar. With the exception of the Garden Room category, each accomodation has its own private pool.
In terms of a fitness facility, there is an outdoor yoga pavilion, an indoor Pilates studio and an indoor state-of-the-art fitness centre at the COMO Shambhala retreat. Sessions offered include a range of complimentary yoga classes and other fitness classes, including meditation and core connection.
The COMO Shambhala Retreat at COMO Maalifushi in the Maldives goes hand-in-hand with the private island resort experience. Eight double treatment pavilions are set over the water, with doors that open wide so guests can relax on a massage bed or in our oversized bathtubs listening to the sound of the waves and the ocean breeze. The facility also has a steam, sauna and Jacuzzi areas with views of the Indian Ocean.
Treatments are based on Asian traditions, from Thai Massage, Taksu and Indonesian Massage, to Foot Reflexology and Indian Head Massage. The retreat also offers classic beauty treatments, including Sundari Facials, Guinot facials, manicures and pedicures.
‘Madi’ (meaning Manta Ray in the local Dhivehi language) takes its inspiration from the region’s fresh, tropical produce and abundant seafood. The food is light and full of flavour. The menu boasts a range of local, Mediterranean and international dishes served throughout the day, from breakfast to late evening. Madi also holds three themed nights each week. There’s the ‘Middle Eastern Feast’ night on Monday, showcasing a culinary journey through the region’s most popular dishes. On Wednesday night the ‘Taste of the Indian Ocean’ explores the area’s characteristic sweet, sour hot and salty flavours, with traditional Maldivian Boduberu dancing and drumming. The week ends with a seafood barbeque on Friday night, dining beneath the stars to the sound of live music from local musicians.
‘Tai’ (Japanese for red snapper), which is a celebratory fish in Japanese culture, showcases sustainable caught seafood from the Indian Ocean. There is also a cocktail bar offering stunning views of the Maldivian sunset. Tai is open six days a week except Fridays, when a seafood BBQ is offered on the beach between Madi and Thila.
Thila is named after rock formations in the Maldives that are covered with abundant marine life. As a place to congregate, it inspires their informal Maldives restaurant and pool bar where guests can come to chill out. Food at Thila is easygoing and family-friendly, with salads, freshly cooked seafood and pizzas. Laid-back music, pool tables and an open-air pool bar with ocean views make Thila the relaxed and vibrant heart of island life on COMO Maalifushi.
The property suits both couples and families looking to enjoy the Maldives.
COMO Maalifushi is the first luxury Maldives boutique resort on the Thaa Atoll. The island is accessible by a 60-minute seaplane transfer to the resort.
