Nestled in the foothills of medieval Monsaraz and near the Alqueva lake, São Lourenço do Barrocal is located in the heart of Alentejo, Portugal. Once an ancient farming village, this restored five-star hotel is set amid ancient olive trees, holm oaks, and vineyards. It lies within a 780-hectare estate that has been in the same family for over 200 years, comprised of a winery, two farm-to-table restaurants, a farm shop selling Portuguese crafts and the estate’s own produce, and a spa. It also features two outdoor pools, an organic vegetable garden and orchard, stables with a horse riding ring, and an array of activities.

Many of Susanne Kaufmann's products and treatments incorporate organic Barrocal products like citrus fruits, olive oil, and aromatics.
Restaurant + Bar

Quintessential farm-to-table dining.

The cuisine at São Lourenço do Barrocal's farm-to-table restaurant is deeply rooted in Alentejo's tradition. Using fresh ingredients from the estate's own organic vegetable garden and other small local producers, the team elevates authentic cuisine with subtle contemporary twists. Suggested wine pairings are also offered. The Hortelão restaurant is located by the pool and organic kitchen garden and is open for dinner only, from mid-Spring to the beginning of Autumn. This farm-to-table summer menu features fresh vegetables, certified organic veal, and fish from the Alqueva lake.

The Hotel Bar is located in the old olive oil mill room, furnished with leather chairs, an inviting counter, and outdoor seating. Savor local wines or signature cocktails, many crafted with Barrocal-grown fruits, vegetables, and aromatics. During the warmer months, enjoy light dishes and cold drinks at the Pool Bar.
