Property Overview

The Newt in Somerset spans a working estate centered on a seventeenth-century main house, remodeled in Georgian times and capturing that essence, with accommodation spread across three distinct settings: the main house itself, the converted Stable Yard, and The Farmyard, a former dairy farm where rooms sit alongside grazing livestock and sheltering oaks. Guests can move freely between all three, with bikes and buggies on hand for the journey. Complimentary drinks at the Garner Bar, croquet on the lawn, and tea in the Library round out the picture at this restrained and classically beautiful Georgian estate.

Agent Tips

  • A deer park tour with Jim is not to be missed; walk through the herds of huge red and fallow deer.
  • A honey tasting hosted by the honey sommelier and head beekeeper in the house cellar is a highly-recommended unique experience.
  • The Farmyard Rooms with a steam pod offer the very best for relaxation and elegance.
Accommodations

Leaning into rustic surroundings.

The Newt's forty rooms are split between Hadspen House, The Stable Yard, and The Farmyard. Hadspen House puts you at the center of the estate's activity, with classically styled rooms – some with views over the ornamental gardens – and the uniquely designed Stable Yard rooms just next door. The Farmyard offers something quieter and more tucked away, with rooms that lean into their rustic surroundings. Generous bathrooms with tubs big enough for two and walk-in showers are a feature throughout, and several rooms have their own steam pods. Breakfast and an in-room larder are included in the rate. Note that not all rooms have air conditioning, but fans are available on request.
Pool + Gym

From heated laps to open-air swims.

The Newt's pool offering spans the full range. The spa houses an indoor lap pool and an indoor-outdoor hydrotherapy pool, the latter flowing from a heated interior section out into the open air. In summer, guided wild swims are available in the estate's lake. Families head to the separate Farmyard Pool, an indoor heated pool open all day.

For something more active, take a stretch in the gym while watching the gardeners tending to vegetables for the dinner plate. The estate runs a weekly schedule of classes to move the body or calm the mind, from Hatha Yoga to HIIT workouts, Pilates, and sound-bathing.
Spa

Botanical treatments rooted in Somerset soil.

Housed in the estate's converted Threshing Barn, the spa draws its identity directly from the landscape around it, with products made using botanical ingredients sourced from the Medieval Herb Garden just outside. Move between the Hydrotherapy Pool, marble Steam Room, Garden View Sauna, and Halotherapy Room, or descend to the Turkish-style hammam. Seven treatment rooms offer everything from massage to facials, and the Rasul chamber is available for couples' mud therapy.
Restaurant + Bar

Three distinct dining experiences on the estate.

The Newt runs three restaurants, each with its own character. The Botanical Rooms in Hadspen House is the fine dining option, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in a more formal setting. At The Farmyard, the Farmyard Kitchen takes a relaxed approach, with wood-fired cooking and sharing dishes from morning through evening. The Garden Cafe sits at the center of the estate gardens, serving primarily estate-grown produce with views to match, running small plates from breakfast through afternoon.

Bar in Hadspen House enjoys live music in the evenings and serves signature cocktails. For a more relaxed pace, The Garner Bar at The Farmyard is a self-service bar, with white and rosé wine from the estate's sister property, and cyder from the estate's ground, complete with a foosball table. The signature cocktail on the estate is The Parabola, with Newt gin, dabinett cyder, elderflower syrup and fresh sprigs of rosemary from the garden.
  • Vibe
    A country house reimagined.
  • Who's it for?
We love The Newt for travelers looking for a countryside escape; garden obsessives, food lovers, and history enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them busy. It also lends itself well to romantic getaways thanks to the peace and quiet.
  • Location
The Newt sits in the Somerset countryside, roughly equidistant between Bath and Bristol, well-placed for day trips to either city while feeling genuinely removed from both. The estate itself spans half a mile, from Hadspen House and its gardens to The Farmyard, with the cyder orchards in between.
