How do you prepare for your trips?

As a travel advisor, I believe that firsthand experience is the key to exceptional service. When I travel, I prepare with the same meticulous care I provide to my clients—because every detail matters. Before each trip, I research not only the most well-appointed hotels and resorts, but also the intel about the service standards, room categories, and unique experiences they offer.

Which destinations or hotels do you go back to again and again? Why?

One destination that holds a special place in my heart is St Barths—a perfect blend of French elegance and Caribbean ease. From the moment I first arrived, I was captivated by its understated luxury, world-class dining, chic boutiques, and the relaxed sophistication that defines the island. Whether it’s enjoying a sunset at Shellona, sailing along the coast, or finding the perfect hillside view overlooking the sea, SBH continues to inspire how I design travel: effortlessly refined, deeply personal, and full of beauty. Richard is a seasoned travel expert with a deep passion for crafting extraordinary journeys and assisting clients in maximizing their world travels. His career began in Bangkok, where he honed his skills in operations while leading a tour operator specializing in travels to Asia. After five years in Thailand exploring Asia’s diverse landscapes and cultures, Richard moved to Dubai to work directly with clients from all over, primarily Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and the UAE. Now based in California, Richard operates under his brand, Zirimiri, an affiliate of SmartFlyer, where he tailors bespoke travel experiences and assists frequent travelers in efficiently managing their time on the road.

While Richard has a deep appreciation for hotels with exceptional design and service, his true passion for travel lies in immersing himself in the essence of a place—wandering through town and city streets to discover unique shops, charming squares, inviting cafes, and captivating stories. Which destinations or hotels do you go back to again and again? Why?

Thailand—specifically Bangkok—will always feel like a second home each time I return. The city stretches endlessly, with countless beautiful pockets and neighborhoods full of life, food, art, and community. It’s just as easy to find a lush green park or cycle the canopy-covered trails of Bang Krachao as it is to navigate colorful markets or catch up with friends at an amazing restaurant on the Chao Phraya riverside.

What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

Havana is a special city, and I was lucky enough to see The Rolling Stones perform in front of a crowd of 500,000 during an exciting time in Cuba. The show turned into a citywide party, and the week was complemented by a road trip to Trinidad on the south coast, where I scuba-dived and strolled along cobblestone streets lined with pastel-painted houses and shops.

Courtenay spent the past twenty years raising two daughters and working alongside her husband at their recruiting firm. During this time, she nurtured her interest in the hospitality space by staying in-the-know of the latest travel industry trends, sharing her knowledge with friends and family, and planning extended family trips as a hobby. During one of these adventures, when her sister’s passport had expired, Courtenay navigated the nuances of expedited passport renewal during the holidays seamlessly; her sister was only a day late to the festivities! It was then she knew she needed to make the change to become a travel advisor.

Now, Courtenay channels her passion into meticulously handling every aspect of her clients’ journeys with a thoughtful approach to planning. Whether it’s a familiar destination or an unexplored one, Courtenay dedicates herself to extensive research, ensuring she has comprehensive knowledge to curate the ultimate trip for her clients.

What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

For me, it’s not always about the destination, but rather the company I keep and the cherished memories we create together. That’s why the multi-generational trips I’ve shared with my family hold a special place in my heart. We take large festive trips every year as a family, visiting Israel to Aspen, we’ve ventured far and wide. These family adventures have strengthened the bonds between grandchildren, despite the distance that separates us living along the Northeast Corridor. Additionally, experiencing travel through the eyes of my children alongside my parents has been especially meaningful to me.

How do you prepare for your trips?

I like to learn about the destination before departing. I invest time in thorough research, exploring the dining options and experiences that are offered by our on the ground partners. Once I arrive, I greatly appreciate the insights shared by the knowledgeable hotel concierge teams. They not only possess valuable local expertise, but also exhibit a remarkable ‘savoir faire’ when it comes to recommendations, making them an exceptional resource.
