My perfect vacation day starts slowly, with coffee and a view, followed by time spent exploring — whether that’s wandering a local town or being out on the water. What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

Without question, my most memorable experience was being guided through Angkor Wat in the late 1990s, when it was still remarkably difficult to reach. Our guide — a poised young scholar of Khmer culture who had lost his parents during the Khmer Rouge era — left me humbled and awestruck.

What does your perfect vacation day look like?

I wake up with the sunrise after a great night’s sleep and text the hotel butler for an almond milk cappuccino with honey, which I take on the overwater bungalow’s balcony. I read some pages of a book, take a dip in the ocean, swim with sea turtles, and fish all around me. And then some dolphins come up to join us for the swim because this is my perfect day! Already having the best morning of my life, I shower, then my husband and kids wake up, and we all head on a big family walk—our daily routine—before breakfast. Breakfast is a sprawling buffet of all my favorites.
