Which destinations are you looking forward to visiting? Why?

Iceland has been on my list for a while. There is something about the idea of standing in the middle of nowhere, in the cold, waiting for the sky to turn green that I find incredibly compelling. The northern lights are one of those things that no photo really does justice to; you just have to be there. Beyond that, Iceland’s landscapes feel almost otherworldly, and I love destinations that make you feel like you have landed somewhere completely different from everything you know.

What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

A walking safari in South Africa. No vehicle, no glass between you and everything around you, just you, your guide, and the bush. At one point, we came across an elephant closer than I ever expected to be. There is something that happens in that moment that is hard to put into words: you suddenly feel very small, and somehow that feels like exactly the right way to feel. You are not a visitor observing from a distance; you are just another living thing sharing the same space. It is the kind of experience that stays with you long after you are back home, and honestly, it is a big part of why I love putting together trips to Africa for my clients.

What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

Visiting Svalbard in the Arctic. Its silence, infinite sky, impressive wildlife, and cinematic landscapes are truly captivating. It is a place where nature leaves you speechless and provides a daily opportunity to reconnect with yourself. Realizing how small we are in the face of such vastness truly makes you feel alive.

Before becoming a resident of Chicago’s North Shore over a decade ago, Patricia grew up in Mexico. Her multicultural background helped her develop a deep appreciation for different cuisines, languages, traditions, and ways of experiencing the world. But it was her love for food, hospitality, and discovering new places that naturally led her to a career in travel advising. Before becoming a travel advisor in 2023, Patricia spent years planning trips for friends and family, always enjoying the process of creating meaningful and memorable experiences for others.

What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

Climbing the Great Wall of China in Beijing has been my most memorable travel experience. As I made my way up the steep, uneven steps, I was struck by a deep sense of awe—the Wall seemed to stretch endlessly across the mountains, disappearing into the horizon. It felt like I wasn’t just hiking, but stepping through history with every move. The physical challenge made it even more meaningful; each tower I reached revealed a new breathtaking view and a reminder of the scale and ambition behind it. Standing there, surrounded by centuries of history and sweeping landscapes, I felt grateful, humbled, and inspired.

What does your perfect vacation day look like?

A perfect vacation day for me combines discovery, movement, and authentic local experiences. I love starting the day by learning something new—whether it’s exploring a historical site, visiting a museum, or learning about a place’s culture through a guided tour. I like to pair that with a physical activity, such as walking through a city, hiking scenic landscapes, or even biking, so I can fully immerse myself in the surroundings. To end the day, nothing beats unwinding at a local restaurant, enjoying regional cuisine, and soaking in the atmosphere. For me, that balance of learning, activity, and connection to local culture makes a day truly unforgettable.

What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

Hiking on the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina, was unforgettable. Standing before the glacier was breathtaking, but walking on the ice was extraordinary. The scale—the blue tones, massive ice formations, and shifting sounds—was awe-inspiring. Nature made me pause and truly take it all in.

What struck me most was being surrounded by something so powerful and untouched. Patagonia makes you feel both small and deeply connected to the world. The silence, cold air, and dramatic scenery made the entire experience feel surreal.

How do you prepare for your trips?

I prepare for every trip by focusing on organization and logistics. I research everything: flights, transportation, destinations, must-sees, restaurants, and daily itineraries. Budgeting and efficient allocation are essential. I enjoy balancing meaningful experiences with practical planning. Learning about each destination beforehand—its culture, neighborhoods, and food—helps me travel confidently. I even review restaurant menus ahead of time, knowing what I want to try. These small details make trips smoother and more enjoyable, reducing stress.

Despite never having imagined a career in hospitality, Mary has always enjoyed traveling and possesses an innate talent for planning.  In her previous life, she worked in banking and mortgages before transitioning to the fashion industry, where she owned her own boutique and discovered a knack for helping clients find the perfect gift to suit their needs. As she began to consider her next chapter, a close friend suggested Mary apply her tailored approach to servicing clients to help plan their vacations.

While exploring the travel industry, Mary discovered that it combined her passions for developing personal relationships with clients, running a business, and traveling all in one. She officially made the move to becoming a travel advisor in 2022 and hasn’t looked back. For Mary, one of the most rewarding aspects of her affiliation with SmartFlyer is being a part of a wider travel community and contributing to life-changing moments. Mary has a particular affinity for hotels, sometimes letting the hotel guide a destination choice. Her expertise lies in Europe, with a deep knowledge of Italy and Spain. However, she also loves Asia and is eager to expand her expertise in that region.

Which destinations are you looking forward to visiting? Why?

I’m looking forward to going to Africa, and most likely, I’ll start with a safari. I’ve wanted to visit East Africa for as long as I can remember, and I’m planning to make it happen in the next year. I’m particularly excited about seeing the wildlife, especially the gorillas in Rwanda. The idea of looking into their eyes and observing them in their natural habitat is thrilling; I’m manifesting the opportunity to see them.

Which destinations or hotels do you go back to again and again? Why?

I keep returning to Spain. I recommend folks to take a closer look; it’s family-friendly, with fantastic beaches, and the culture, the food, and the people are so welcoming. There’s something for everyone, and it’s especially great for those conscious of their budget. I know that I will spend more time there. Additionally, I’m eager to learn more about the United States, travel closer to home, and explore some of my favorites while also discovering some new spots, too.

Born and raised in Texas, Sarah grew up in Houston and has lived in Austin since 2012. After a successful career in advertising, she began her journey with SmartFlyer in 2017. Since then, she has planned trips all over the world for her clients.

What has been your most memorable travel experience to date?

In 2021, I had the opportunity to visit Kenya and fell completely in love with the destination. As an animal and nature lover, there is nothing quite like being halfway across the world experiencing a safari. While staying at Angama Mara in the Masai Mara, I was fortunate enough to witness one of the first river crossings of the Great Migration. Seeing nature unfold right in front of my eyes with no one else around is an experience I will never forget.

Which destinations or hotels do you go back to again and again? Why?

Living in Texas, I grew up visiting Mexico every year. I love the beach and make it a point to go to the Riviera Maya area at least once a year for a beach vacation. However, I also enjoy exploring the interior, with favorites like Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende. Next up on my list is Oaxaca.

After leaving her tri-state roots to attend college in Arizona, Cydney was bitten by the travel bug. Her semester studying abroad in Rome solidified her love of exploration – from long weekends spent tasting trdelník in Prague to afternoons sipping spritz in Capri – she knew that her passion for exploring new places and connecting with local cultures was deep rooted. Post-college, Cydney’s career path brought her back to the East Coast; and despite being based in vibrant NYC, she still found herself pulled to visit new destinations halfway across the world.

Beyond her extensive Europe travels, Cydney has dropped pins across the Caribbean, Middle East, South America and Africa. She has also spent several stints in Asia as a solo traveler, including far flung locations like India and Bali. Most recently, she fell in love with Sri Lanka’s undiscovered charm. She recommends intrepid travelers to visit the island sooner rather than later while it’s still unspoiled.
