Can Bordoy Grand House & Garden

If you’re the type of traveler who seeks a mix of city and beach, we recommend dedicating a couple of nights to staying in downtown Palma. La Residencia, a Belmond Hotel

The sprawling hotel grounds house one hundred and twenty-one rooms, each with a private balcony or terrace, prime for admiring the view. For wellness lovers, the Talise Spa offers treatments with products sourced from citrus, almond, and olive oil trees. Son Bunyola

Tucked into the twists and turns of the Tramuntana Mountains, Son Bunyola sits on a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its protected positioning was the culprit of immense restrictions around how the land could be modified, so, after years of being unable to secure building permits, Sir Richard Branson sold the land. Branson repurchased the property in 2015 to reinvest in his dream of adapting it into a hotel, and in the summer of 2023, the twenty-six-room hotel made its debut to great anticipation. Amenities include a ninety-two-foot infinity pool, tennis courts, and access to a pebble-strewn beach within walking distance. While the growth of the almond, olive, and grape trees is very much still in progress, this passion project by one of the world’s hospitality icons is sure to impress.

Just about a 45-minute drive east of Palma, Can Ferrereta is located in the town of Santanyí. And here’s where it gets extra fun! Mallorca is made for exploration, and getting into its seemingly endless array of beaches, called calas, is a key part of any trip to the island. Depending on where you’re staying, you’ll want to devise a beach plan accordingly. Consider departing from your hotel just after breakfast to beat the crowds both for parking and setting yourself up with a spot at the beach. 

The key to a truly remarkable beach day in Mallorca is knowing that the most remote beaches are the most difficult to reach; oftentimes, there isn’t parking nearby, so you’ll have to plan for comfortable attire. But if it’s serenity you’re after, the trek is always worth it! And on the note of privacy, keep in mind that doing a boat day will grant you access to the most elusive beaches on the island. Sa Calobra and Cala Tuent are two examples of tucked-away gems that are best reached by boat. But, we’re getting ahead of ourselves…

Northern Beaches in Mallorca

• Ca’n Picafort: Stretched out before a handful of hotels, the beach is the longest and sandiest in the north. Expect to find all beach services, including sunbeds for rent, umbrellas, watersports, shops, bars, and restaurants.

Northeastern Beaches in Mallorca

• Cala Mesquida: With few buildings in sight, Cala Mesquida is beloved by locals, including what some would refer to as “naturists.” Anchored by dunes, the long stretch of white sand beach will leave you plenty of space to rent one of their double loungers.
• Cala Torta: Getting here on an unmarked road is half the adventure. With nearby hiking and an open-air shack primed for snacking on the fresh catch of the day, a visit here is likely to be one of your island highlights.

Eastern Beaches in Mallorca

• Cala Mondragó connects to Cala s’Amarador: Located within an extensive nature reserve, Cala Mondrago is ideal for jumping off rocky outcrops into the azure waters. If it’s too busy at Mondragó, keep walking along the coast to s’Amarador where you can rent loungers if you need to get out of the sun.
• Cala Varques: One of the beaches to target if you are looking for ultimate solace, plan to walk about fifteen minutes to Cala Varques, knowing it’s worth the effort. Also, plan to bring your snacks and drinks because there are no services here, just unspoiled white sand split between two coves.

Western Beaches in Mallorca

• Cala Deià: A switchback single-lane road carves its way from Deià town to Cala Deià. Whether you’re hiking down from La Residencia or have secured street parking, this pebbled-lined beach is an island favorite. There are two chiringuitos serving up simple dishes here, including Instagram-famous Ca’s Patró March, the more elevated of the two.
• Magaluf: Every island has to have its wild side, and on Mallorca, it’s Magaluf. This mecca for Brits is infamous for drawing a more party-loving crew, and this white sand beach is dotted with resorts and beach clubs.
• Portals Vells: If you’re looking for a three-in-one special, the bay at Portal Vells is home to three small beaches, each boasting a unique character. This is the spot where many yachts choose to anchor, an indication that it’s one of the prime spots in our Mallorca guide.

Southern Beaches in Mallorca

• Cala Llombards: A sandy beach located in the southeast of Mallorca, Cala Llombards has sweeping cliffs that just beg adventure-seekers to jump. This one gets busy as the day wears on, so the earlier, the better.
• Cala s’Almunia connects to Calo des Moro: After you park on the street, be prepared to walk a fair bit to get to Cala s’Almunia. You can set yourself up here or keep walking to reach Calo des Moro, which is most certainly worth the trek.
• Cala Pi: Located just a few kilometers from the prehistoric village of Capocorb, this wide sandy beach is waiting for you beneath a steep set of stairs. You can expect fine sand and a cute beach bar below!
• Es Trenc: One of the largest and most famous beaches in Mallorca, Es Trenc is marked by miles of turquoise waters met by white sand. If you’re looking for a more traditional beach, this long stretch provides you with ample space to set up a chair while being surrounded by dunes and salt flats.

If you’re anything like us, most trips start and end with one question: “Where are we eating?” But the desire to experience the best restaurants in Mallorca must be met with an open mind; the island is deceivingly large, so if you’re building an itinerary around beach hopping, make that your priority and let the restaurants come second. Also, keep in mind that many restaurants on Mallorca require a credit card on file to make a reservation. So, while it’s not necessarily in our nature to recommend going to a destination without dining reservations, Mallorca is a place that begs for you to leave your Resy armor stateside and lean into spontaneity.

Mallorca Guide: Lunch Hotspots

• Assaona (near Palma): If you’re looking for a true beach club in Mallorca, your options are going to be more limited than those in neighboring Ibiza. But Assaona is a solid choice just outside Palma for lunch with your feet in the sand and a cold bottle of rosé at your side. 
• Ca’s Patró March (in Cala Deià): Yes, this is the one you always see on Instagram. And yes, it is worth the hype. Unfortunately, reser­vations are nearly impossible to snag; but, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to get a table. For a few summers running, we’ve been able to get a table by showing up before the crowds that assemble for the first seating at one o’clock. 
• Sa Foradada (in Deià): Known for its location built into a cliff, Sa Fordada is ideal for a seaside lunch with epic views. Don’t be shy to ask for the first-row seating right by the water and order some of the delicious wood-fired paella! Note, it’s closed for the 2025 season but plans to reopen in 2026.

Everything for everyone

Val d’Isère has it all and tops my list as an all-time favorite. This quintessentially French destination feels like a true hideaway and is about as deep into the French Alps as it gets, with a picturesque approach by car offering first impressions straight out of a James Bond film. Val d’Isère is about an hour from the nearest train station (Bourg St Maurice) and just under four hours from the nearest major airport (Geneva); though, if you’re seeking a sleeker arrival experience, helicopter transfers are always an option that can be arranged by your SmartFlyer travel advisor. The journey to Val d’Isère is certainly worth it, not just for the seemingly endless terrain for all levels of skiers, but also for all the finest in dining, shopping, and accommodations the destination has to offer.

Where to Stay in Val d’Isère

…even beginner skiers can have a “big mountain” experience complete with views in every direction. It’s truly everything from family-friendly, beginner-friendly, expert-friendly, and even non-skier-friendly.

Airelles Val d’Isère serves as a landmark in the center of town, while also offering ski-in/out access to a total of 300km of piste across Val d’Isère and neighboring Tignes. What I find most remarkable and sets Val d’Isère apart from other ski stations in the Alps is that it offers a considerable amount of easy terrain at higher altitudes, so even beginner skiers can have a “big mountain” experience complete with views in every direction. It’s truly everything from family-friendly, beginner-friendly, expert-friendly, and even non-skier-friendly. Though Val d’Isère is tucked away deep in the French Alps, its town has all modern conveniences and also offers unique experiences. For those who can’t get enough of the altitude, Le Refuge de Solaise is a chalet-style hotel situated at the top of Val d’Isère and is accessible only by gondola. Conveniently, Airelles and Le Refuge de Solaise are each home to two of Val d’Isère’s dining hot-spots: Le Piaf and Le Refuge, respectively. The energy in Val d’Isère is lively, so guests who may prefer a more discreet, exclusive experience just outside the heart of the town should consider a private chalet by La Mourra.

Chamonix, France

A playground for adventurous skiers

One of Chamonix’s greatest draws is its convenience—both for new and intermediate skiers who simply want quick access to the Alps (it’s only an hour away from Geneva), and also for expert skiers in search of legendary, lift-served, off-piste terrain. Several ski stations are spread throughout the Chamonix Valley and it takes about thirty minutes to drive from one end to the other, each offering varying terrain. Les Houches and Vallorcine (located on opposite ends of the valley) would be the most beginner and family-friendly ski areas, while Grand Montets caters to intermediate and expert skiers. The gondolas originating in Chamonix town serve Brévent-Flégère ski areas, which offer everything from beginner to expert terrain. The Aiguille du Midi gondola whisks expert skiers and private guides up to ski the Vallée Blanche, a legendary and lengthy off-piste descent. The Aiguille du Midi gondola also takes non-skiers to visit its observation deck for unmatched views directly in front of Mont Blanc.

Where to Stay in Chamonix

Chamonix town is lively both day and night, so if you’re looking for a relaxing, luxe ski holiday, a private chalet may be best. Ski-in/out is non-existent in Chamonix’s central town due to the relatively low altitude of the base of the valley, so the most convenient location for accommodations would be near the loading zones for the Brévent or Flégère gondolas. Though limited, some ski-in/out accommodations can be found outside the center of town, and would offer access to Les Houches, Vallorcine, or Grand Montets ski areas.

Courchevel, France

If you love the south of France in the summer, you’ll love Courchevel in the winter. The theme of Courchevel seems to be “How can we top this?” and every restaurant, every boutique, and every hotel property has an answer.

Likely the most well-known destination in the Alps, Courchevel needs little introduction. But it’s for good reason– Courchevel is a wintry playground for snow bunnies and experienced skiers alike, and the extensive offering of the absolute finest in hospitality draws clients from all over the world. • Seek higher ground: The higher the altitude (of both the accommodation, and the ski station’s summit), the more likely conditions will be better for skiing.
• Stay central: If staying in a resort that’s located between a number of stations, guests can have the ability to choose to ski whichever has the best conditions in the moment. 
• Be realistic: Considering today’s climate extremes, “ski-in/ski-out” isn’t necessarily guaranteed, and is always weather-dependent.
• Have an open mind: Gondola and chairlift operations are also weather-dependent. For example, conditions could look perfect, but if winds are too strong to operate the lifts, areas of a ski station could remain closed. Destinations with other activities such as spas, shopping, or snowmobiling can keep guests entertained regardless of conditions.
• Be prepared: Having the right gear can make the difference between having an ‘okay’ ski holiday or having a wonderful ski holiday. During our scouting trip, we learned that it wouldn’t be out of character for him to camp out in a cave for several days, studying the exact way a woman native to the mountains makes a tortilla before bringing the technique back to teach his team. This commitment to his craft is evident in the beautifully crafted dishes at the resort’s award-winning signature restaurant, Cocina del Mar; the casual beachside outpost, La Palapa; the al fresco daytime outlet, La Terrazza Americana; the Mediterranean-inspired spot, Las Estrellas; and ALMA, the newest outpost, a cocktail and coffee bar overlooking a roaring fire pit. Café culture in Vienna will delight even the most discerning coffee drinker. We love this glossary to help break down some of the terminology to keep in mind while ordering; on our recent scouting trip, the “melange” was a crowd favorite. We tested out a handful of the top recommended cafés across the city to compile the below list of vetted spots. 

• Café Demel: Located in the heart of city center, this café dating back to 1786 is your destination for Kaiserschmarrn, in addition to any one of its gorgeous cakes. There is also an extensive array of beautifully packaged chocolates should you want to grab a gift to bring back home.
• Café Leopold Hawelka: A short walk from Rosewood Vienna, Café Hawelka is an old-school Viennese coffee house with excellent coffee from its own roastery that pairs perfectly with its apple and curd cheese strudel. The interior dates back to the 50s and authentically evokes the Viennese lifestyle like few other places.
• Café Museum: Popular amongst the Viennese, Café Museum is located on a sun-soaked corner tailormade for a caffeine break.
• Café Mozart: For more than two hundred years, Café Mozart has been one of the first addresses where Vienna coffee culture was born. Its location directly across from the ALBERTINA creates a lively atmosphere ripe for people-watching.
• Café Sacher: If you’ve heard of the Sacher torte, this is your destination to taste the original just beside Hotel Sacher. The chocolate cake is filled with apricot jam and makes for an ideal afternoon pick-me-up or post-dinner dessert.

Like any major city, narrowing down a list of the “best restaurants in Vienna” presents an impossible task — there are simply too many delectable spots not to miss some gems!

Fine Dining in Vienna

• Restaurant Amador: The only three Michelin-starred restaurant in Vienna, this fine dining establishment is located in an old wine cellar outside of the city center. • Steirereck: Recently voted as the number twenty-two restaurant on the World’s 50 Best, this two Michelin-starred outlet is an absolute must when in Vienna. We loved it for its modern Austrian cuisine and the team’s passion for innovation — be sure to opt for the six or seven-course tasting experience, and don’t skip the cheese course. • Restaurant Vestibül: An upscale Austrian restaurant set in a decadent atmosphere, the cuisine here is in the style of the former imperial residence of Vienna. Here, traditional dishes are recreated to bring you back in time.

Casual Dining in Vienna

• Kikko Bā: A sister restaurant to Mochi, this more casual spot is located just a few minutes walk from the Karlplatz and Vienna State Opera, which serves delectable tapas, delightful mochi, and innovative fare with a Japanese influence.
• Motto am Fluss Café: We love this spot for an outdoor brunch ranging from international cuisine to Austrian dishes enjoyed while overlooking the Danube Canal. There’s also a bar and seating indoors for colder months.
• Mochi: For an afternoon or evening when you’re craving a crossover between European and Japanese cuisine, look no further than the buzzing Mochi. This is one you’ll definitely need a dinner reservation in advance, but we did have luck on a lunch walk-in. There’s outdoor seating beneath a beautiful alcove of trees for you to soak up the chill vibes of the 2nd district, just a short walk from the Danube Canal.
• Palmenhaus: Whether you go for breakfast or dinner, this brasserie set inside a greenhouse is an idyllic spot to see life unfold in the surrounding park. We recommend securing outdoor seating here if you’re keen to people-watch!

Traditional Austrian Dining in Vienna

• Salzamt: A favorite meal on our recent scouting trip, this local haunt is situated directly opposite Vienna’s oldest church. Here, you can expect handwritten menus (don’t expect an English translation!) filled with bistro classics like Vitello Tonnato, Goulash, and of course, Wiener Schnitzel. For summer visits, outdoor seating on the charming Ruprechtsplatz makes for a cinematic setting to enjoy your evening.
• Oswald & Kalb: If you’re looking for a classic spot in town, this one comes highly recommended for a traditional Austrian restaurant with what many locals consider to be the best Wiener Schnitzel in town!

Bars in Vienna

• Loos American Bar: While you might be thinking, “American Bar? I’m in Vienna!” just take our word for it that Loos serves up some of the best made negronis and martinis in town. As a bonus, if you’re there during the summer months, your cocktails will come with a glass of fresh strawberries.
• Neue Hobeit Bar: Located on the rooftop of Rosewood Vienna, this elegant cocktail bar offers an extensive menu of beverages complemented by view of St. Peter’s Church.
• R&BAR: Bright, beautifully mixed cocktails come together with delicious street-style food at R&Bar for a fusion of flavors and colors.

Vineyards in Vienna

Part of Vienna’s ability to surprise visitors lies in its viticulture. The city’s vineyards play a key role in preserving the green belt that envelopes Vienna. • ALBERTINA Museum: With a diverse exhibition of art including Albrecht Dürer’s Young Hare and pieces from Renaissance etchings to contemporary sculpture, the ALBERTINA is a must for art lovers. Permanent displays include works from Monet, Picasso, Cézanne, Chagall, and more.
• Kunsthistorisches Museum: Not only is the Fine Arts Museum the home of the former collection of the Habsburg family, but it’s also visually one of the most stunning buildings in Vienna. Here you can see world-class paintings, an Egyptian collection, and Greek and Roman antiquities.
• Museumsquartier: One of the largest Museum complexes in Europe. It is also a large outdoor living room for the Viennese, with great casual lunch options. Here you can visit Leopold Museum for an amazing Klimt collection and the world’s largest “Egon Schiele” collection.
• Sigmund Freud Museum: The very address where Sigmund Freud lived and worked for forty-seven years before he had to flee from the Nazis in 1938, this home to psychoanalysis allows you to walk through the very rooms where the Freud family lived.
• Upper Belvedere: The legendary palace where the state treaty of Austria was signed, Upper Belvedere is home to an extensive collection of Klimt’s, including his famous The Kiss. Conclude your tour with a tranquil stroll through Burggarten, where you’ll encounter the solemn Mozart Memorial, reflecting the city’s rich cultural legacy.

Where to Shop for Handmade Goods in Vienna

• Jarosinski & Vaugoin: Like slipping through a portal back in time, Jarosinski & Vaugoin on Zieglergasse 24 will find you in the old-school showroom of the illustrious silversmiths. Jean-Paul Vaugoin, the sixth-generation owner, is sure to show visitors a look at his family’s workshop in the courtyard of the Biedermeier building which looks just like it would have a century ago. The business reveals how Vienna has always been a city of immigrants: the Vaugoin family came to Vienna at the time of Napoleon and never left, and the company’s master silversmith, Yakup Kurter, arrived from Syria 35 years ago. The silversmiths are huddled over worn wooden tables where they hammer, file and grind the silver before polishing it to a shine, all by hand. After many more stages in the process, some of the silverware eventually winds its way as far afield as the royal palaces of the Arabian Peninsula and Malaysia.
• Studio Comploj: The Glashütte of glassblower Robert Comploj presents itself as a modern gallery that is also a shop. The exhibited vases and bowls surprise guests with unusual colors and extraordinary structures. And it’s an even bigger surprise when Robert Comploj comes around the corner with his hipster glasses, black tee-shirt, and tousled hair – not exactly what people imagine a glassblower would look like. The friendly glassmaker manufactures the glass items himself in his shop in the 18th district. Robert Comploj learned his craft in Murano and combines old Venetian techniques with his own innovative methods. Comploj is in his element here: he blows and molds the delicate glass, although he likes to describe his approach to the medium as ‘punk’. He loves to shape the glass by hand, risking the odd burn or two in the process.
• SCHEER: The Scheer workshop – former purveyor of footwear to the imperial and royal court – is a multi-level store and active workshop. Upstairs, you’ll find skilled cobblers on traditional stools in front of low workbenches, intently focus on their craft of which it takes over a decade to learn. One of them is Markus Scheer, who now runs this 200-year-old family business, now in its seventh generation. His trademark is an orthopedic smock that he wears when working. It is a nod towards his training as a maker of orthopedic shoes, and symbolic of how important the perfect fit is for him when it comes to footwear. The timespan between the first measurement and the finished product can easily reach half a year at Scheer. It takes around 60 hours to complete each pair of bespoke shoes. Originally only a shoe­maker, Scheer now also makes bags, belts, and luggage. The exclusive shop exudes history, without coming across as old-fashioned. And the fine aroma of leather is everywhere.
• J.T. Kalmar: Designer Garth Roberts loves browsing the archives of traditional Viennese manufacturer J. T. Kalmar, whose light fixtures are in high demand the world over. Originals from the days of the Österreichischer Werkbund collective command high prices at auctions and antique stores, as their shapes dovetail beautifully with twenty-first-century design culture. Garth Roberts is also captivated by the Werkbund designs. As the creative boss of Kalmar Werkstätten, he is helping to give Austrian Modernism a new lease of life by putting a contemporary spin on the old Werkbund sketches. The finished products speak a contemporary design language: they are minimalistic, functional, and made from high-quality materials. The delicate feet of the Fliegenbein and Hase models are Kalmar to the core.
• Zur Schwäbischen Jungfrau: The store Zur Schwäbischen Jungfrau sells exclusive custom-tailored table linen, bedding, and toweling. The traditional Viennese company was founded in 1720 by a linen trader from Swabia and later became an important supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court. Today, Hanni Vanicek and her nephew Theodor Vanicek run the company. High-quality bespoke items, monograms and embroideries are produced in their own studio in the 8th district. Royal houses from around the world number amongst the customers; the King of Malaysia once even paid a personal visit to the Schwäbische Jungfrau on Graben while on a state visit.
