As one of New York’s most art-filled neighborhoods, we were magnetized to Chelsea long before we moved into our SmartFlyer Penthouse on West 25th—from our perch on Manhattan’s West Side, we’re breaking down some favorite spots to stay, sip, and see spellbinding art.

Surrounded by world-class galleries, museums, and cultural landmarks in conjunction with an inspired dining scene, Chelsea is more than just a neighborhood to pass through. Rather, this part of the city is one to sink into on a deeper level. Whether you’re strolling the High Line with a cardamom bun in hand or catching dinner on convivial 10th Avenue, this is the Chelsea we’ve come to adore.

Hotels in Chelsea

• Hotel Chelsea: Few addresses have the level of lore that 222 West 23rd holds. Long before its birth as a hotel, the Chelsea was a bohemian magnet, home to writers like Allen Ginsberg, musicians from Dylan to Patti Smith, and countless visual artists. After a decade-long renovation that began in 2011, Hotel Chelsea reopened in 2022, blending historic details like its wrought-iron balconies with a contemporary polish. Notably, its spa and buzzy dining outlets welcome not just hotel guests but also attract a chic local crowd.
• Faena New York: Freshly opened in September 2025, Faena New York brings the flair of the Miami-based brand to life in the heart of Chelsea’s One High Line tower. True to Faena’s ethos, the property doubles as a cultural stage with its plaza serving as a public gallery for rotating, site-specific works by Faena Art, a theme translated indoors through its lobby mural by Diego Gravinese.

Chelsea Galleries

• 303 Gallery: In 1996, 303 Gallery was one of the first to move to Chelsea after having its original outpost at 303 Park Avenue South, dating back to 1984, with interim stints in the East Village and Soho. Firmly planted at 555 West 21st Street for nearly a decade, today, the contemporary gallery showcases exhibits ranging across all media types, maintaining its reputation for being independent amongst larger gallery brands.
• David Zwirner: In 1993, David Zwirner opened his eponymous gallery on Greene Street in Soho before relocating to Chelsea in 2002. Today, the gallery has locations in Los Angeles, London, Paris, and Hong Kong in addition to its five-story project space on West 20th, representing more than seventy artists with a willingness to push boundaries, including emerging voices and cross-disciplinary experiments.
• Gagosian: One of the giants in the gallery world often displaying work by major figures or blue-chip names, the works in Gagosian’s Chelsea galleries project a kind of refined power. Here, you’re likely to feel the weight of prestige, but also the confident clarity of a gallery that knows how to give artwork the stage it deserves.
• Hauser & Wirth: One of several locations within this well-established global gallerist, this expansive, five-story space serves the mission of placing art at the forefront of every visitor experience. In Chelsea, the program spans painting, sculpture, installation, and video, showcasing both major and emerging artists with a sense of institutional gravitas.
• Kurimanzutto: Originating in Mexico City in 1999, founders Mónica Manzutto and José Kuri operate from an ethos rooted in experimentation and collaboration. Their roster of artists often blurs the lines between disciplines, geographies, and cultural narratives. Here,  you can expect the art to feel alive in the current cultural landscape, playful but grounded.
• Lehmann Maupin: Representing diverse contemporary artists from around the world, the work at Lehmann Maupin spans painting, sculpture, installation, video, drawing, and more, often with a focus on identity and cultural resonance. When you walk in, anticipate the sense of a balance between form and idea with bold works given room to breathe.
• Montague Contemporary: A gallery that’s earned an extra special place in our heart after collaborating on bringing buyers to Zeitz Moca in Cape Town, Montague Contemporary centers art from Africa and the African diaspora. Rather than adhering to a strictly ‘white cube’ mode, the team here emphasizes more immersive, relational, and inclusive programming, including its collaborative trips with SmartFlyer.
• Nara Roesler: A Brazilian contemporary gallery dating back to 1989, Nara Roesler has a reputation for elevating both historical and emerging voices from Brazil and beyond. Expanding from its São Paulo roots to Rio de Janeiro before opening its Chelsea outpost in 2015, the gallery’s program emphasizes curatorial rigor with mid-career and established artists whose work reflects Brazil’s rich lineage.
• Pace Gallery: A powerhouse in contemporary art, our Chelsea neighbor operates out of a striking, eight-story column-free flagshop on West 25th. The gallery represents a broad, ambitious program spanning painting, sculpture, multimedia, performance, and large-scale installations, all the while mixing established names with daring contemporary voices.
• Silverlens: The first Southeast Asia-based gallery to open in New York, this Manila-born contemporary art gallery dates back to 2004, with a focus on photography, sculpture, video, installation, and mixed media. Visitors can expect a sensibility attuned to local histories and identity, positioning Filipino and Southeast Asian artists as anything but peripherial.
• Tina Kim Gallery: A Chelsea mainstay with deep ties to the spirit of Seoul, Tina Kim Gallery bridges Korean contemporary art with a global audience. Since 2001, the gallery has spotlighted the stories of the women of the Dansekhwa movement alongside rising experimentalists. Whether introducing Western collectors to a canonical Korean artist or placing younger talent on an international stage, here, you can expect a cross-cultural dialogue.
• White Columns: New York’s oldest alternative art space, White Columns has been quietly radical since 1970. Today, its modest space maintains its spirit of experimentation with lean exhibitions that lean raw and unpretentious.

Chelsea Museums

• Dia Art Foundation: Anchoring West 22nd Street with a suite of expansive galleries designed for large-scale, long-term installations, the Dia was one of the first institutions to stake a claim in Chelsea, dating back to 1987. From being a trendsetter in cementing the neighborhood’s contemporary art hub to today’s meditative approach to program, Dia remains at the forefront.
• The Whitney Museum of American Art: Though technically perched at the southern edge of the Meatpacking District, we’d be remiss not to mention this collection of more than 25,000 works of modern American Art. Perched above the Hudson with clear views of the High Line, The Whitney is integral to the downtown cultural fabric, showcasing rotating exhibitions that provide a pulse-check on what American art means right now.
• Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art: A meditative counterpoint to Chelsea’s harder-edged contemporary scene, The Rubin is dedicated to Himalayan art, with collections ranging from ancient Tibetan scrolls to contemporary works in dialogue with Buddhist philosophy.

Places to Go in Chelsea

• Chelsea Market: Housed in the former Nabisco factory where the Oreo cookie was born, Chelsea Market has transformed into one of the city’s most vibrant food halls. From artisanal bakeries to global bites and indie shops, it’s the kind of place where history and culture converge to create bite after delicious bite.
• The High Line: Once an elevated railway, The High Line now stretches from Chelsea to the Meatpacking District as one of Manhattan’s most iconic public spaces. Stroll along landscaped pathways with Hudson River views while taking in rotating site-specific art installations and architectural moments at every turn.
• Little Island: Floating just off the West Side Highway across from 14th Street, Little Island feels like a whimsical escape from the city grid. With its tulip-shaped piers, rolling lawns, and open-air performances, this futuristic park is as much a cultural stage as it is a green oasis.
• Printed Matter: A mecca for artists’ books and experimental publishing, Printed Matter is the world’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination, understanding, and appreciation of artists’ books. Stop by this Chelsea storefront to browse zines, limited-edition books, and titles you won’t find elsewhere.

Restaurants in Chelsea

• Bottino: Right off the High Line, Bottino brings a dose of Tuscan ease to Chelsea with house-made pastas, Italian wines, and a garden patio that hums in warmer months. And for the afternoons when you’re more on the go, visit next door for their takeaway sandwiches.
• Café Chelsea: Tucked inside Hotel Chelsea, this all-day café feels like a Parisian brasserie reimagined with a downtown New York sensibility. Expect welcoming banquettes, bistro classics, and a dose of old-world charm layered with the hotel’s storied bohemian history. Don’t miss out on the ravioli.
• Cookshop: A neighborhood darling since 2005, Cookshop champions seasonal, market-driven cooking with a warm, bustling energy. It’s the perfect stop for brunch before a gallery walk or a lively dinner with friends.
• Empire Diner: This restored 1940s railcar is a Chelsea icon sitting pretty on 10th Avenue. Today, its polished up interiors keep its retro soul intact. The menu is all about comfort food classics meeting modern twists, making it a spot where nostalgia is in no short supply.
• Hav & Mar: Marcus Samuelsson’s seafood-focused restaurant acts as a celebration of flavors rooted in the African diaspora. The interiors are as vibrant as the menu—bold, textured, and made for long evenings of conversation.
• Juban: This stylish Japanese bistro serves up refined comfort food from karaage-fried chicken to sushi in a warm, minimalist setting. Perfect for an intimate dinner with friends seeking a menu with a twist.
• Orchard Townhouse: Housed in a charming rowhouse, The Orchard Townhouse feels more like a friend’s stylish living room than a restaurant. The menu is super approachable, ideal for brunch or a cozy dinner with a side of people-watching. Don’t skip the burger!
• Shukette: One of our standout faves in not just the neighborhood but the entire city, Chef Ayesha Nurdjaja brought the Middle Eastern flair she became known for at Soho’s Shuka to Shukette. From the moment you step into this buzzing 9th Avenue staple, the open kitchen keeps sizzling skewers, pillowy pita, and its veggie-forward sides coming. 
• Som Bo: This newcomer brings Cambodian flavors to Chelsea, balancing traditional recipes with creative flair. The atmosphere is relaxed yet polished, making it an ideal stop for adventurous palates.
• Sullivan St. Bakery: Famous for its no-knead bread recipe that changed the home baking landscape, Sullivan Street Bakery is a Chelsea institution. Beyond crusty loaves, you’ll find Roman-style pizza, rustic pastries, and the city’s most perfect morning coffee companion.

• Cafe by the Girls: A newcomer with charm we can’t resist, Cafe by the Girls has a fun Colombian spirit infused into its community-driven vibe. Expect elevated lattes and a rotating menu of pastries that feel as stylish as they are satisfying.
• Fabrique Bakery: A Stockholm import beloved for its cardamom buns made in typical Swedish style, the line that often accumulates here is for good reason. Everything is baked by hand with organic ingredients, making for an even more thoughtful morning pastry moment.
• Fellini Coffee: With a nod to Italian cinema in both name and mood, Fellini delivers a strong espresso met with equal panache on the branding front. A cup from here makes for the perfect pre-gallery jolt.
• Kobrick Coffee: A family-run roaster since 1920, Kobrick brings a century of expertise to its Meatpacking café. By day, it’s all about carefully crafted espresso, and by night, the space transforms into a cocktail bar with lively downtown energy.
• Tall Poppy Bakery: A newer gem, Tall Poppy is your go-to for inventive pastries and beautifully crafted breads that change with each season. This is one of our favorites for a fun breakfast spread!
• Variety Coffee Roasters: Born in Brooklyn, Variety brings its artisanal roasting ethos across the river to Chelsea. The vibe is unfussy yet stylish, with consistently excellent coffee that’s earned it a loyal neighborhood following.

• Bathtub Gin: A hidden speakeasy behind an unmarked door near Chelsea Market, expect vintage décor, live jazz, and full 1920s glam. If you want a “classic NYC cocktail night,” this is the one.
• Bar Bonobo: Fusing ‘70s Italian disco flair with modern New York sophistication, Bonobo serves up ice-cold martinis amidst plush interiors imported from Italy, matched with a vibe that transports you to a golden age of glamour.
