Trinchera Reserve & Lodge

Fort Garland, United States

Trinchera Reserve & Lodge is an authentic and all-inclusive luxury lodge set within a 172,000-acre private conservation reserve which offers privately guided adventures of all kinds in Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Mountains

Property Overview

Trinchera Reserve & Lodge is an all-inclusive retreat set within a 172,000-acre private conservation reserve in Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Spanning six ecological zones and three 14,000-foot peaks, the reserve sets the stage for a “High Alpine Safari,” with custom-designed, privately guided itineraries ranging from fly-fishing and ridge walks to backcountry expeditions and overnight stays at remote outpost cabins.

Despite the vast landscape, the property remains intimate, with just sixteen guest rooms in the main lodge and two multi-bedroom Reserve Residences. Days spent exploring are balanced by chef-driven dining, a dedicated wellness center, and fireside time in the Great Room. Formed from the historic Trinchera and Blanca ranches and anchored by one of the largest conservation easements in U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service history, the reserve reflects a longstanding commitment to land stewardship. Its certified DarkSky setting makes evenings just as memorable, with remarkably clear views of the night sky.

Accommodations

Southwestern character meets the quiet of the high desert.

The Lodge features sixteen guest rooms designed by Jet Zarkadas and Jen Wilson of Los Griegos Studio, with interiors that echo the high desert landscape just beyond the windows. Warm Southwestern details, Western artwork, and thoughtfully sourced vintage pieces lend each room a lived-in sense of history rather than a manufactured “lodge look.”

For groups looking for more space, Trinchera also offers two multi-bedroom Reserve Residences: Cat Mountain House and The Lake House. Set along the edge of a mountain lake, The Lake House includes a main house and guest house, plus a great room, game room, and wraparound porch overlooking Trinchera’s three 14,000-foot peaks.
Gym

Movement comes with a view of the Colorado wilderness.

The Schoolhouse Cabin houses Trinchera’s fitness center and is also the setting for yoga classes. The gym includes a Peloton, an elliptical, and a treadmill for workouts between days spent hiking, riding, fishing, and exploring the reserve.
Spa

Wellness here extends well beyond the treatment room.

Traditional treatments, hot tub soaks, and sauna sessions offer a restorative counterpoint to days spent exploring the reserve. Whether guests are unwinding after a backcountry adventure or simply disconnecting for a while, the surrounding landscape is as much a part of the experience as the spa itself.
Restaurant + Bar

From ranch, garden, and trail to table.

Dining at Trinchera draws on local growers, ranchers, and producers alongside seasonal ingredients grown in the property’s garden. Menus move with each day’s adventures, from meals overlooking the mountains in the Dining Room to ridgetop lunches packed for the trail and dinners prepared over an open fire. Back at the lodge, floor-to-ceiling windows frame the valley, while the patio sets the scene for long summer dinners outdoors.

Trinchera’s bar and Great Room become a natural gathering place as adventures wind down. Classic cocktails and seasonal specialties set the tone for an easy evening by the fire, where guests can settle in and trade stories from across the reserve.
  • Vibe
Trinchera pairs warm Western hospitality with a deep sense of place and a genuine commitment to conservation. Days revolve around guided adventures across the reserve, while evenings slow down over dinner, cocktails by the fire, and stories from the trail. The atmosphere is relaxed, intimate, and rooted in the landscape.
  • Who's it for?
Trinchera is a strong fit for families, multigenerational groups, couples, and friends who want to spend meaningful time outdoors without following a one-size-fits-all itinerary. Families come for elk sightings, campfire dinners, and days spent outside, while couples and groups can lean into everything from active backcountry adventures to slower days at the lodge.
  • Location
Trinchera sits in southern Colorado’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains, neighboring Great Sand Dunes National Park, with Taos approximately ninety minutes to the south. The setting feels distinctly removed, giving guests access to an expansive corner of the American Southwest where mountains, high desert, and open sky shape the experience.
